Heat Stroke:

  • Heat Stroke is a form of hyperthermia or heat related illness caused by long exposure to high environmental temperature or by intense physical exercise or activity in hot weather. 

Contributing Factors Of Heat Stroke:

  1. Exposed to hot weather for a long period. 
  2. Excessive physical activity in hot weather.
  3. Lack of water intake.
  4. Wearing of excessive or thick clothes in hot weather.
  5. Alcohol consumption causing temperature imbalance. 
  6. Associated diseases like diarrhea, excessive vomiting. 

Who are in target?

  1. Newborn and infants.
  2. Under five children.
  3. Elderly peoples.
  4. Outdoor workers or employees like farmers, laborers, traffic police etc.
  5. People who are dealing with vigorous activities like athletes, military personals etc. 

Symptoms:

  1. Body temperature more than 40-degree Celcius)
  2. The confused state of mind.
  3. A throbbing headache.
  4. Dizziness
  5. Lack of sweating in compare to nearby persons.
  6. Red hot and dry skin.
  7. Muscle cramps.
  8. Nausea or vomiting.
  9. Extreme lethargy.
  10. Rapid heartbeat.
  11. Rapid slow breathing.
  12. Mental disorientation. 
  13. Mental confusion.
  14. Unsteadiness of gait.
  15. Seizure.
  16. Feeling excessive thirst.
  17. Blur vision.
  18. Unconsciousness

Things To Prevent The Heat Stroke

  1. Wear light, the loose fit, and light color dress while going out.
  2. Keep your house well ventilated.
  3. Well, ventilated kitchen.
  4. Keep all doors and windows open.
  5. Avoid vigorous activities.
  6. Take rest if you are ill.
  7. Avoid outdoor activities as far as possible. Or shift your appointments in the early morning or in the late evening.
  8. Infants should be kept in most cool places in the house and better to use no clothes. 
  9. Avoid alcohol consumption.
  10. Use of safe (preferably boiled and cooled water) drinking water is most important to avoid any chance of the diarrheal outbreak.  

Things to Eat to Prevent Heat Stroke.

  1. For the elderly person it necessary to consume minimum eight glasses of water a day.
  2. Coconut water is a wonderfully balanced health drink for the prevention of heat stroke.
  3. Fruit juice is a very good house whole remedy for prevention of heat stroke.
  4. Popular lemon juice drink (commonly prepared in Indian kitchens) with common salt and sugar is a very good home remedy for the prevention of heat stroke. 
  5. Buttermilk is a very balanced and gut friendly drink for these days.
  6. Jal jeera drink is another gut friendly heat stroke home remedy. 
  7. Water lemon is a very good source of water and gives symptomatic relief.
  8. Avoid cold drinks (chemically treated) like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and other brands.
  9. Use of homemade ORS or commercially available powder is the most convenient drink for the prevention of heat stroke. 
  10. Babies, who are bellow six months and totally dependent on their mothers needs more breastfeeding to overcome from dehydration.

Management of Heat Stroke:

  1. If you feel that you are the victim of heat stroke, then you need assistance. So remember that if you see someone having such attack then follow the bellow things.
  2. Transfer the victim in a cool and well-ventilated area. Simply away from sunlight where there is enough air circulation. 
  3. Remove unnecessary clothes. 
  4. Make a plan to reduce the body temperature bellow 101 degrees Fahrenheit for which use cool water sponging or you can use ice packs if available. 
  5. If possible you can keep him in a bathtub by using the ice pack or cool water.
  6. After controlling the temperature rush to the nearest hospital.
*** Never give ice pack sponging to children under one year. It may cause immediate hypothermia.
